My recession-proof pet

A turtle!

There have been some sad stories in the news lately about people having to give up their pets due to hard times. So I thought I’d share a fact you may not have known: turtles are very economically friendly pets. Harold probably costs us about $5 a month to own. The worms he eats are .68 cents for a month’s worth, the rest of his food is fruits and veggies from our regular groceries and other than that, it’s just the hydro to heat and light his little terrarium.

That being said, turtles need special care so don’t run out and get one just ’cause it’s cheap. They live for a LONG time (25 to 30 years), so you’ll probably have it through boom times and bust alike.  Oh, and they’re not cheap to buy: Harold was like $200.
